How to Fold a Sofa Bed in 8 Easy Steps (Works for Every Type)

Folding a sofa bed should take less than two minutes but it can feel frustrating if you are pulling in the wrong direction, have not removed the bedding first, or are not sure exactly how your model is meant to move. The steps are slightly different depending on whether you have a pull-out sleeper, a click-clack design, or a futon-style frame, but the core principles are the same for all of them.

This guide walks you through the complete process in eight clear steps. Each step covers what to do, what to watch out for, and how to handle the most common issues so you can fold your sofa bed smoothly every time without guessing or forcing anything.

Step 1: Remove All Bedding, Cushions, and Pillows

Before folding the sofa bed, remove all bedding and loose cushions. Folding the mechanism with sheets or pillows still in place can create resistance, bunch fabric inside the frame, and potentially damage the mechanism.

What to Remove

  1. Remove all sheets, blankets, and duvet covers from the mattress.
  2. Take off any throw pillows or loose seat cushions.
  3. Place bedding neatly to the side so it does not get in the way while folding.
  4. For pull-out models, remove the seat cushions before closing the frame.

Tip: Fold and store bedding together after use. If your sofa bed has built-in storage, keeping bedding there makes future setup much easier.

Step 2: Clear the Space Around the Sofa

A sofa bed needs enough surrounding space to fold properly. Pull-out models require room in front, while futon and fold-flat styles may need clearance behind the sofa. Clearing the area first helps prevent the frame from catching on nearby objects.

What to Check

  1. Make sure there is around 60–90 cm of clear space in front of the sofa.
  2. Check that nothing is pressed against the back or sides.
  3. Move coffee tables, footstools, or floor lamps out of the folding path.
  4. For futon-style models, leave enough room behind the sofa for the frame to fold backward.

Important: Never fold a sofa bed while a person or pet is near the frame. The mechanism can move suddenly, and the metal frame may cause injury if released unexpectedly.

Step 3: Identify the Handle, Strap, or Release Point

Every sofa bed has a specific point where the folding process begins, such as a handle, strap, bar, or release latch. Finding it first helps you fold the mechanism correctly without putting unnecessary stress on the frame.

Pull-Out Sleeper

  1. Look for a fabric strap or handle attached to the front of the mattress.
  2. If no strap is visible, grip the front metal bar with both hands.
  3. Check for side latches or hooks that may need to be released before folding.

Click-Clack

  1. The release point is usually the front edge of the seat base.
  2. Grip the front of the seat firmly with both hands before folding.

Futon-Style

  1. Locate the centre hinge where the seat and backrest connect.
  2. Release any side safety latch before folding, if present.

Tip: If you still have the product manual, check it before folding. Some sofa beds place the release point in less obvious locations.

Step 4: Fold the Mattress or Frame Inward

Applies to: Pull-Out Sleeper

Pull-out sofa beds fold back in the reverse order of opening. The mattress folds first, followed by the metal frame sliding back into the sofa. Move slowly and guide the frame carefully to avoid damage or pinched fingers.

How to Fold It

  1. Stand facing the bed and grip the handle or front bar with both hands.
  2. If the mattress folds in half, lift the far section and fold it onto the front half.
  3. If the mattress stays flat, keep it centred as the frame moves inward.
  4. Lift the front bar slightly and push the frame back toward the sofa body.
  5. Guide the frame carefully while the support legs fold underneath.
  6. Continue pushing until the frame sits fully inside the sofa and the front edge is flush.

Important: Keep your fingers away from folding legs and hinges. The frame may close quickly once the locking point is released.

Step 5: Reset the Click-Clack to Sofa Position

Applies to: Click-Clack / Fold-Flat Models

To return a click-clack sofa bed to sofa mode, the seat base must be lifted until the locking mechanism resets. Once engaged, the backrest moves back into its upright position.

How to Fold It Back

  1. Stand beside the sofa for better control of the movement.
  2. Grip the front edge of the seat base with both hands.
  3. Lift the seat base upward until you hear the first click.
  4. Continue lifting slowly as the backrest begins to rise.
  5. Push the backrest gently into the upright position until you hear a second click.
  6. Lower the seat back into its normal seating position.

Tip: If the backrest does not rise properly, avoid forcing it. Check that the mechanism has clicked into the correct position first.

Step 6: Fold the Futon Frame Upright

Applies to: Futon-Style Models

Futon-style sofa beds fold back into sofa form by lifting the backrest upward. As the frame folds, the mattress bends naturally with it.

How to Fold It Back

  1. Release any side safety latch before folding.
  2. Stand behind the futon and grip the top rail of the backrest.
  3. Lift the backrest slowly using steady pressure.
  4. Allow the seat section to fold naturally as the frame hinges upward.
  5. Continue lifting until the backrest is fully upright.
  6. Re-secure the safety latch if your model includes one.
  7. Adjust the mattress so it sits evenly across the frame.

Good to Know: Larger or heavier futons are often easier to fold with two people, especially when guiding the frame evenly.

Step 7: Replace Cushions and Check the Lock

Once the sofa bed is fully folded, replace the cushions and make sure the frame is securely locked in place. A sofa that feels uneven or unstable may not be fully closed.

Final Checks

  1. For pull-out models, place the seat cushions back in their original positions.
  2. For click-clack models, confirm the backrest is fully upright and locked.
  3. Press gently against the back of the sofa to check for movement.
  4. Sit down carefully and test that the seat feels stable and level.
  5. Make sure no part of the frame is sticking out or visible from the front.

Important: Never sit heavily on a sofa bed that has not fully locked into position. An unsecured frame may collapse and cause injury.

Step 8: Store Bedding and Return the Room to Normal

This final step is about resetting the space so the sofa bed is ready for next use. A little organization here saves time later and keeps everything easy to find.

What to Do

  1. Fold sheets, blankets, and pillowcases neatly together.
  2. Store bedding in the sofa bed’s built-in compartment if available.
  3. Put decorative cushions back onto the sofa.
  4. Move any furniture or items back to their original positions.
  5. Check that the sofa looks tidy and cushions are evenly arranged.

Tip: Keep a lightweight blanket and a spare pillow stored inside the sofa bed compartment so it’s always ready for guests without extra preparation.

Fold It Right, Every Time

Once you understand how interlocking tiles fit together, installation becomes quick and simple on any flat outdoor surface. A few basic steps are enough to achieve a clean, professional-looking finish.

Start with accurate measurements and a properly prepared surface to ensure everything aligns correctly. Follow the click system carefully and keep edges straight as you work across the area. When cuts are needed, take your time for a precise fit around corners or posts.

FAQs

1. How long does it take to fold a sofa bed?

Most sofa beds take 1–3 minutes once you are familiar with the mechanism. Pull-out models take slightly longer, while click-clack and futon styles can be folded in under a minute.

2. Why does my sofa bed feel heavy to fold?

Pull-out sofa beds use a steel frame, which can feel heavy when lifted from a flat position. Keeping the mattress aligned and folded before pushing the frame helps reduce effort. A dry lubricant on hinges can also improve movement if it feels stiff.

3. Can one person fold a sofa bed alone?

Yes, most sofa beds are designed for single-person use. Click-clack and fold-flat models are easiest, while larger pull-out or futon styles may be easier with two people for better control.

4. What should I do if the sofa bed frame gets stuck?

Stop forcing it immediately. Check for trapped bedding or fabric, then remove any obstruction. Restart the folding process slowly. If it still jams, refer to the product manual before applying force.
